Priory Country Park is a stunning 360-acre green oasis nestled alongside the River Great Ouse in Bedford. This expansive park is a local treasure, offering a diverse mosaic of lakes, meadows, and woodland that provides a much-needed escape from the urban hustle. The heart of the park is its large, tranquil lake—a haven for water sports enthusiasts, anglers, and those who simply want to enjoy a peaceful walk along the water's edge.
History buffs and nature lovers alike will appreciate the park's past as a former gravel extraction site, which has been masterfully reclaimed to create a rich biodiversity hotspot. Today, it acts as a vital corridor for local wildlife, making it one of the best spots in Bedfordshire for birdwatching and spotting shy mammals in their natural habitat.
Visitors can expect well-maintained paths perfect for walking, cycling, or jogging, alongside dedicated play areas that make it a firm favourite for families. The extensive network of trails offers varying lengths to suit all abilities, ensuring that whether you are looking for a quick morning stroll or a full day of outdoor exploration, you will find a route to suit you.
Practicality is key to the park's success. It features a visitor centre with a café, which is the perfect spot to refuel after a bracing walk. The park is at its most beautiful during the spring and autumn, but it remains an inviting, accessible destination year-round. It is well-connected for those arriving by bike or foot, and parking is plentiful, though we recommend checking the local council website for the latest visitor centre opening times if you plan to visit mid-week.
